No end to commuters' woes at Mangalore Junction

When businessman Pramod Bhaktha of the city had to board a train at Mangalore Junction (erstwhile Kankanadi station) last year, it started raining. The coach he had to board was nearly 200 metres away. By the time he reached the coach, he was drenched.“So were about 20 college girls and boys,” Mr. Bhaktha told The Hindu at the railway station on Monday. “It is a big problem,” he said. The shelters cover only three or four coaches whereas most trains here have more than 20 coaches.Mr. Bhaktha is just one of the many commuters who highlighted this as a key problem commuters faced at the station. “Then, there are no porters here,” added real estate agent and areca businessman Rajesh Vardhan. “Older people, those who have to carry children have a big problem on hand,” he said.Retired electrical engineer Thomas Braganza, who wanted to travel by Mangalore-Mumbai superfast train on Monday, was perplexed that the train with majority of its commuters boarding from here was scheduled to arrive on the second platform. In the absence of ramp for the foot-over bridge he and many others had to carry the rolling bags (ones that come with wheels). “On top of it, there are no porters,” he said. Many commuters said transport to and from the station continued to be a big problem in the absence of a pre-paid counter. “No autorickshaw driver uses meter,” said trader Arvindkumar Baldev. He and Mr. Bhaktha said commuters alighting at the station at night had to face taxi drivers and autorickshaw drivers who gang up to fleece them. “You have to pay Rs. 200 for autorickshaw and Rs. 400 for the cab,” Mr. Bhaktha said. The absence of adequate coach guidance system on second platform, narrow road (shortcut) from Naguri, lack of cleanliness, non-availability of good food on the platforms were among the other problems highlighted by commuters.S. James, Public Relations Officer, Palakkad Division, said the Railways had sanctioned extension of shelter on platform 1 to cover four more coaches and to provide coach guidance system on platform 2. Agreeing that there was no porter at the junction, he said nobody had applied for the job when called for.Mangalore MP Nalin Kumar Kateel said he had written to Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi and the Railways Board about the need to extend the shelters. He would hold a meeting with the divisional manager within the next 15 days regarding other problems. He would persuade the Mangalore City Corporation to widen the road from Naguri to the railway station and seek pre-paid autorickshaw counter, he added.

Tunnel transit

A century-old tunnel, legacy of the British, is all set to change the face of the Old Delhi railway station. Eclipsed by the New Delhi and Nizamuddin stations, this heritage building will once again rise to prominence with the refurbishing of this 70-metre-long tunnel. Ten months from now, moving within the maze of platforms will be a breeze. Commuters will no longer have to navigate through the crowded overbridges.

The CPRO, Northern Railway, S K Sharma, said till last month, the tunnel was used to carry goods, a practice followed since the construction of this heritage building. "We have now built dedicated pathways for movement of heavy luggage and parcels. The tunnel will ease the rush on the overbridges by accommodating part of the over 3 lakh passengers coming to the station every day. We will provide lifts at each platform for the convenience of passengers. This will bring down reliance on porters," he said.Senior divisional engineer Rakesh Chaudhry said the tunnel runs right under the tower clock on the main entrance-the SP Mukherjee Marg. "We plan to install a powerful lift that will take the passengers down to the tunnel. The present lift, used to haul goods, will be transformed for passenger use. We plan to construct a flight of stairs on the ISBT side of the station that will lead to the tunnel," said Rakesh.

Sources said they are yet to ascertain the cost of the project as the final plan awaits nod from the Railway Board. "There are three major issues to be dealt with. First, there is lack of proper lighting inside the tunnel. Further, there are ventilation and seepage problems to handle. The engineers are on the job. We hope to meet the deadline and complete the work in ten months," said an officer.

Once ready, the passengers will be led to the tunnel with the help of proper signage. Working on the tunnel with a width of 3.14 metres and a height of 2.10 metres will be a challenging task, claimed an officer. The railways has also chalked out a new traffic plan for the main entrance on S P Mukherjee Marg to facilitate movement inside the tunnel. All vehicles will be given direct access to the station after turning right from the Red Fort side. Earlier cars and other private vehicles had to take a U-turn and cover a considerable distance before being allowed entry to the station. "We will create new lanes for such vehicles. Most of the vehicular movement will now be inside the station premises," said Rakesh. The main entrance has also been given a facelift. "The columns in the facade of the building are glossy and smooth after being coated with granite. The main concourse hall has been spruced up using granite cladding," said Ashwini Lohani, DRM (Delhi).

Two parking lots have been built to accommodate 200 cars. A separate lane has been made for taxis after dismantling decrepit structures near the MCD night shelter. "We have done our best to keep the area around the night shelter clean,'' said an official.

Ooty's toy train needs serious maintenance

Ever since the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR), wherein the hill train, popularly called ‘toy-train’, chugs along the scenic and one of the renowned mountain train routes in the world, became a world heritage site in 2005, it has turned out to be a major crowd-puller and runs packed almost every day.
In the past, basic infrastructure facilities were lacking in the major railways stations at Mettupalayam and at the foothills of Nilgiris, Coonoor and Ooty along the NMR. But, things have started changing for the better now.
The very look of these heritage railway stations would reveal that they have started receiving the modern touch in the form of tiled platforms, water facilities and improved toilet facilities with renovated buildings.
But, there are flaws. For example, the new toilet at Ooty railway station stinks with overflowing drainage. The waiting rooms were locked even on Sunday afternoon when this correspondent visited the station. There are not enough staff to control passengers quarrelling to occupy seats in the coaches.
Bags and bags of decorative plant materials loaded on to the passenger platform irks passengers, especially those waiting in queue for a long time to board the unreserved coaches. Stray animals that gain entry into the stations prove that cleanliness needs to be improved. The restaurant at Mettupalayam is quite good, while service in the one at Ooty needs improvement and the Coonoor restaurants needs to be expanded.
Pointing out that sufficient chairs are not available for passengers at the station, Mr S. Anantha Krishnan, committee member of the Coonoor citizens’ forum, said the railway stations in Coonoor, Ooty and Mettuplayam, though given a facelift with ATM facilities, still lack cleanliness.
“Water facilities must be improved further and steps taken to provide hot water as those in the hills prefer hot water in the cold weather. Also, sophisticated water filter equipment should be made available in all the stations.”
Mr Mrinal Battacharjee, a tourist from Bengaluru, said the small railway stations along the NMR look pretty, but with increasing number of tourists, there should be more retiring rooms.
Stating that waiting rooms in Ooty and Coonoor stations are available only for first-class passengers, Mr Battacharjee said in waiting rooms heater and TV facilities should be provided in these cold places. Facilities are provided for drinking water, but the question is hygiene.
“The government should see that the heritage structures in the stations are preserved, but that they have modern facilities,” he suggested.
Heritage stations lag behind for want of modern facilities
Hill train aficionados want more facilities to meet the requirements of tourists, and modernised coaches with toilet facilities to suit modern-day train travel.
Saying that a tourism information centre is a must in Nilgiri Mountain Railway stations, Mr Gajendra Jain, a tourist from Jaipur, said this will help passengers get first-hand information about the hills and lodging facilities. Railways should open shops to sell hill products like tea, eucalyptus oil at a nominal price for the benefit of tourists.
Further, fruit stall facilities are lacking in Ooty and Coonoor stations, Mr Jain said, and suggested that railways should run tourist taxis and autos to see that travellers are not fleeced. Water facilities should be enhanced with washrooms of international standard in the stations as NMR has become a world renowned railway, he pointed out.
Mr K. Natarajan, president of the heritage steam chariot trust, an organisation of NMR-lovers, said the time has come to build modern coaches with toilet facilities as NMR travellers undertake a time-consuming journey in the racked section between Coonoor and Mettupalayam without break or facilities to answer nature’s call.
The railways should re-open some of the closed railway stations between Coonoor and Mettupalayam to see that trains stop at these stations, with a recovery locomotive to help the hill train during emergencies. There were proposals in the past to build more retiring rooms in the Ooty railway station yard for economy class travellers. This should be taken up immediately, he added.
Hailing the good parking facilities now in Mettupalayam station, Mr Natarajan said railways should consider opening medical shops in NMR stations to help tourists. Water facilities in Mettupalayam station are good now, but they need to be improved to ensure that passengers get clean, filtered drinking water round-the-clock. He lauded the role of the railway police in regulating the crowd and queue for the hill trains.
A Canadian tourist, who did not wish to be named, said there should be translation facilities in the stations to tell foreigners which coach they should board and where they should sit.
Funds hurdle delays progress of NMR
Lack of sufficient funds still seems to be a big hurdle for the maintenance of NMR. Though the officials in the NMR in Nilgiris chose to be tight-lipped on the issues, sources in the railway said around 300 people were allotted to maintain the NMR line but now it has come down to around 100.
Saying that though the NMR with steam locomotives has become a major tourist attraction, the NMR is still running on losses and more funds needed to be pumped in to bring about an all round modernisation at the NMR stations together with modernised coaches, the sources maintained.
However, the officials said that the number of foreigner tourists travelling on the NMR has increased nowadays and for them the absence of facilities to load their baggage in the small NMR coaches is quite a problem.

‘German’ coaches soon for B’lore Rajdhani express

South Western Railway has begun trial runs of the state-of-the-art bogies and is waiting for safety clearance to start commercial runs,Travelling on the Bangalore-New Delhi Rajdhani Express is about to become better for Bangaloreans with the South Western Railway (SWR) all set to introduce state-of-the-art Linke Holfmann Bush (LHB) coaches. The LHB coaches are built using German design technology. SWR has already acquired 18-20 these coaches and has begun trial runs. It is awaiting clearance from the railway safety commissioner for commercial runs.SWR divisional railway manager S Mani said, “After sorting out some technical issues we will announce a date for the commercial run of LHB coaches.”LHB coaches are manufactured with low-cost stainless steel. They are fitted with eco-friendly and energy-efficient LED lights. Curtains and other fittings inside AC coaches are fire-resistant.LHB rakes can hit a maximum speed of 160 kmph but officials plan to run them at speeds around 140 kmph.

A senior railway official said, “The interiors of these coaches look good. No screws are visible on the side-wall panels. They also come with an improved air duct design for better air flow and cooling. Windows are bigger to facilitate good visibility and come along with functional roller blinds.
They also have sound insulation to reduce noise.” Toilets are also designed to discharge waste at predetermined speeds to help maintain cleanliness in railway stations. The coaches have glued PVC floors, which prevent floor damage through water seepage.

Swati Pandey, a student in a city college, said, “We always envied the Thiruvanantha-puram Rajdhani train which has German coaches. With SWR now getting these coaches for Bangalore Rajdhani, we are looking forward to travelling to the national capital.”

Senior divisional mechanical engineer P Shrinivas said, “The design for these variant coaches, including layout, manufacturing drawings and specifications are done by rail coach factory, Kapurthala.”

Safest Drinking Water at Cheapest Price

In addition to its passenger-services oriented business like setting up of Food Plazas on Railway premises, Rail Tour Packages and internet ticketing, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd. (IRCTC), is providing clean, safe and hygienic water to railway passengers. IRCTC, a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Railways, is manufacturing Rail Neer brand of Packaged Drinking Water at these locations i.e. Nangloi (Delhi), Danapur (Bihar) and Palur (near Chennai) with cumulative production capacity of 3.80 lakh bottles  (1 litre capacity) per day. The aim of IRCTC is to supply safest drinking water at cheapest price with the usage of minimum resources so as to conserve environment. The first ever Rail Neer plant at Nangloi in Delhi was inaugurated on May 6, 2003 to provide safe packaged drinking water to Indian Railway passengers with capacity to produce 66,000 bottles per day which has been enhanced to 1,02,000 bottles per day in April 2009.  This plant is based on state-of-the-art technology for water purification and packaging. This is a completely automatic plant and there is no manual handling of product water at any stage. Till now plant has produced 20,14,39,896 bottles. The Rail Neer is manufactured as per BIS standard. Rather Rail Neer standard are better than what is prescribed in BIS standard. 24X7 model in-house laboratory is there at Plant to conform to BIS standard and water samples from each batch are preserved for six months to check the shelf life. As far as outside lab testing is concerned, monthly, half yearly, and yearly and two yearly samples are sent to highly repute approved laboratories for pesticides, chemical, micro-biological and Radio Active testing.  No sample of Rail Neer has ever failed in outside lab testing. The one litre bottle of Rail Neer is sold at Rs. 12/- (per bottle of one litre) on all Railway stations and trains.. By selling Rail Neer brand, IRCTC has provided high quality pure drinking water at fair price to Railway passengers and public visiting the stations. The competitor brands are thus forced to keep up the quality and keep prices under check. Rail Neer is supplied to all Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains originating from Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore and all Duronto trains originating from Delhi, Patna, Kolkata, Bhubaneshwar, Chennai and Bangalore.  Further Rail Neer is supplied to important Mail/Express trains originating from the above stations. A total of 180 Railway stations are declared mandatory for sale of Rail Neer.IRCTC is operating three Neer plants. One plant is at Danapur (Bihar) having same capacity as Nangloi i.e. 1.02 lakh bottles per day. The plant is working since 2004.  Latest plant is at Palur (Chennai), which was commissioned in July 2011. This plant has capacity of 1.8 lakh bottles per day and is equipped with latest models of Bottle Blowing machines.   For the first time, automatic hot flue labeling machine and shrink packing of bottles has been introduced by IRCTC. These two machines give higher productivity and better quality. The construction of a fourth plant at of IRCTC Ambernath (Mumbai) will be taken up at full swing. The plant layout is similar to one at Palur and similar machinery and equipment will be provided. The plant will have installed capacity of two lakh bottles per day or 17000 cartons per day and is likely to be commissioned in 2013-14. This plant will meet the requirement of the Western part of the country.IRCTC will continue expansion since average Rail traveler prefers Rail Neer over the other local brands.  Demand for Rail Neer at railway has increased steadily and there is a huge gap between the existing production capacity of the plants and the demand. To bridge the gaps there is a need for setting up of more plants across the country so as to strength the supply chain and logistic of Rail Neer supply at railway stations and trains in all Railway Zones.CTC is also looking to set up two new plants at Hyderabad and Nagpur by forming a Joint Venture company under PPP mode. To meet the requirement in Delhi area, one more plant is planned to be set up in Delhi NCR area. In this plant different pack sizes like 250/500 ml bottles and 20 litre jars may be taken up. Trains to be speeded up

The running time of 30 trains in the Palakkad division will be reduced by about 350 minutes from July this year when the new railway time table comes into effect, Divisional Railway Manager, Palakkad, S.K. Raina, has said.
After unfurling the Tricolour at Hemambika Nagar Railway Colony Ground, Palakkad, as part of the Republic Day celebrations on Thursday, he said the maximum speed on the Shornur-Mangalore (both ways) route had been increased from 100 to 110 km per hour. The division had already speeded up 44 trains (39 Express and 5 Passenger) from 5 to 50 minutes resulting in reduction in overall running of about 700 minutes. He said work on electrification of Kannur-Mangalore section would commence soon.
Mr. Raina said the division had been able to man all level crossings and the safety drive and awareness programmes had resulted in zero accidents last year. The division had been able to achieve a record cumulative punctuality of 94.4 per cent for mail and express trains and 92.9 per cent for passenger trains during April-December 2011.
The total earnings during April to December 2011 had shown improvements despite the goods shortfall from Mangalore port. The total earnings has been Rs.441 crore compared to Rs.419 crore during the same period last year, an increase of 5.12 per cent. Mr. Raina said the passenger earnings had gone up from Rs.258 crore to around Rs.295 crore, an increase of 14.14 per cent. The division handled 591 lakh passengers against 541 lakh passengers (during April-December, 2011) which is 9.24 per cent increase over last year.
Six out of the nine trains announced in the last budget had been introduced and the remaining was expected to be introduced shortly. The introduction of Nilambur Road-Thiruvananthapuram Rajya Rani Link Express and Palakkad Junction-Mangalore Central Inter City Super Fast Train had benefited people of north Malabar, he added. George Mathew, Divisional Security Commissioner; Sitaram Sinku, Additional Divisional Railway Manager; and Reeta Raina, president, Southern Railway Women's Welfare Organisation, Palakkad; took part.

Top Rly Officials still tight lipped!

The  promised Duronto Express rail connectivity between Vishakhapatnam and Secundrabad, appears to be a mirage for the people of Vishakhapatnam. In 2010 -2011 railway budget Ms. Mamta banerjee proposed it. The year is about to come to an end but still the destined date of flagging off is a mystery to everybody.Till now the cause of delay has been quoted as  non availability of  rake but top sources at the Ministry are tight lipped even at guessing or giving an approximate date as they say that it is a closely guarded secret of the ministry. They fear that its disclosure will lead to a lot of  pressures for other new trains. They  feel that the non nonavailability of rake is only a red herring,in fact the first priority in the allotment of the rake is given to the state from where the people’s representatives are strong. Unfortunately for vishakhapatnam nobody has been able to properly pursue and press their case strongly in the Parliament. There are approximately 5000 commuters travelling daily between the two destinations and there are around 18 trains that connect the two places at different times on different days of a week, yet there is a severe short supply of berths because of the overbooking in the trains. Till now the most sort after train connecting the two destinations is Godavari Express and the booking has to be done two months in advance. Vishakhapatnam Rail Division is one of the highest revenue earner for the Govt but this step motherly treatment towards that very division is inexplicable.Interestingly all the details of the proposed Duronto Express were announced and chalked out but for the date of its flagging off. The train which will ply thrice a week will have 18 coaches and would cover 701 km in nine hours and twenty five minutes with Vijaywada as its technical stoppage. This makes the proposed Duronto Express the fastest train  between the two cities . Duronto, once it starts, will leave Secundrabad for Vishakahpatnam on Monday, Wenesday and Saturday.
The word Duronto which is originally a bangla word means ‘quick’ but this Duronto Express for the people of Vishakhapatnam has been proving to be exactly the opposite. May be’ shanto  or shusto” in bangla will be the right name. The people of Vishakhapatnam have to wait and watch and see for how long will it take  for the Duronto to reach them.

Bangalore realty change rides on metro

Even as the Metro rail chugs on its way up the popularity chart in Bangalore, the government has approved the second phase of ‘Namma Metro’. The 72-km Phase II of Metro will come up at an estimated Rs 27,000 crore, and is expected to be completed by 2017.Will the coming of the Metro churn — or even marginally touch — the real estate market scene as it did the Capital?Mr V. K. Sharma, Director and Chief Executive, LIC Housing Finance, at a recent event in Bangalore, said that he expected the metro train service to transform the city in the next three years. He explained the case of how Delhi went through a similar experience after the metro service was started there. Real estate analysts point out that the peripheral property markets in areas like Gurgaon sky-rocketed, thanks to the Delhi metro.
PHASE 1
In October 2011, a 6.7-km stretch between Baiyappanahalli and M G Road, with six stations, was inaugurated. The stretch is Metro’s ‘Reach 1′ part of the East-West corridor of the first phase. Phase I will see a 42.3-km network, 8.8 km of which will be underground on the East-West (Baiyappanahalli to Mysore Road) and North-West (Hesarghatta to Puttenahalli) corridors with 40 stations. The first phase is expected to be completed by December 2013.
The second phase will see extension of all reaches on the two existing corridors, east-west and north-south. Besides, two new lines — from Jayanagar to Electronics City, passing through Jayadeva Hospital, BTM Layout and Silk Board, and the other from Nagavara to Gottigere, passing through the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore — would also come up.
In a significant move, that will ensure that this public transport would serve the IT population of this city in a better way, the east-west corridor would be extended up to Whitefield in the east, and Kengeri in the West. The north-south corridor would now be extended up to the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre in the north, and up to Anjanapura township in the south.
It has to be noted that Phase 1 of the project doesn’t cover the IT hubs of the city. That route would have helped it address the city’s infamous traffic woes in a better way. A real estate developer pointed out that Phase I of the metro doesn’t cover those city locations where IT offices are located. Currently, Reach 1 of the Metro has made no difference to the everyday traffic woes of the areas it serves, he said.
IT CORRIDORS
The city’s working population predominantly belongs to the IT/ITeS sectors, and most of the IT/ITeS offices are located in locations such as Outer Ring Road, Electronics City, Whitefield, and Bannerghatta Road. Extending this infrastructural project to include the IT corridors of the city would not only make commuting to office much easier and faster for the city’s working class, but would also help de-congest the fully-blocked roads.
As has been the experience so far with the Metro, the commute between the now-operational Baiyappanahalli and MG Road doesn’t take more than 9 minutes. That very road, at peak-hour traffic, would take anywhere between 30 and 40 minutes (at the minimum), while commuters can cover the distance in around 25 minutes during non-peak hours.
However, not all are convinced that the metro service in Bangalore has made any significant impact to the city’s real estate market, as was expected. “The metro service so far hasn’t been an attraction to the real estate market because the first phase doesn’t offer the desired connectivity,” said Mr Naresh Dandapat, a real estate analyst. He pointed out that on the eastern corridor, a stretch till Baiyappanahalli doesn’t make any significant difference to the property market in Whitefield now, despite both these locations being on Old Madras Road. “In future, when the second phase connects to Mysore Road and Whitefield, peripheral areas would see a better demand,” he added. A timely conception and execution of the project would have helped both existing property owners and developers planning projects in the areas. The real estate market, at its current growth rate, would outgrow the reach of the metro in five years’ time, explained Mr Dandapat.
“Though comparisons are made, it has to be noted that the Delhi metro was opened at the right time. Had Bangalore Metro offered the connectivity to Whitefield now, it would have helped the micro-market’s real estate values better than five years from now,” he explained. Between 2009-10 and 2011-12, the micro-market has seen a 16 per cent growth in property prices, said Mr Dandapat.
The metro train service is expected to transform the city in the next three years, making property markets skyrocket.
