OPTICAL FIBER COMMUNICATION IN SOUTHERN RAILWAY

Southern Railway’s Optical Fiber Cable (OFC) network provides a vital communication link and plays an important role in running of trains and other day to day activities.The network forms the backbone of all communications in the railway system ranging from train control operations, inter-zonal/divisional exchange junction connectivity, station to station connectivity, passenger reservation and unreserved ticketing systems, wi-fi facility in stations, etc.It also supports the entire e-booking, voice, data and multi-media services for all types of applications and even the recently launched paperless suburban ticketing systems.


The important applications of optical fiber communication in railways:


  • For data transmission circuits
  • For long distance circuits
  • For short distance circuits for linking of telephone exchanges
  • For control and emergency communication
  • Signaling application for fail safe transmission
  • Railway owned intranet services
  • Centralised monitoring of Integrated Security Systems and other special circuits
  • Extension of communication to accident / disaster locations
  • Networking of all circuits (data logger, voice logger, passenger amenities at railway stations, etc.)
    The advantages of optical fiber:

  • Wide bandwidth resulting in large capacity
  • Immunity to electromagnetic and radio frequency interference
  • Low transmission loss
  • Optical Fiber cable is lighter in weight and hence easier to handle
  • Human safety ensured – optical fiber does not carry any electricity
  • Signal Security
  • Flexibility in system that enables upgradation
  • Higher resistance to chemical effects and temperature variation
    As o­n 31st April, 2015, OFC has been laid for about 4205 route kilometers in Southern Railway of which OFC for 202.97 route kilometers was laid during 2014-15.Now, 99.99% of routes and all divisions in Southern Railway are covered by OFC network.
