The 3rdbroad gauge railway line between Tambaram – Chengalpattu

Tambaram is a suburb of Chennai metropolitan city. The Grand Southern Trunk Road and the Chennai – Kanniyakumari railway line pass through Tambaram.Situated about 27 km south of Chennai city, Tambaram is home to many educational institutions, industries, offices, commercial establishments, hospitals, etc.The Tambaram Air Force Station of the Indian Air Force is also located here. The MEPZ (Madras Export Processing Zone), housing a number of industries and offices, is established nearby.Fuelled by such factors, Tambaram has developed as an important part of Chennai metropolis.

Chengalpattu is located south of Tambaram. This is the next town on GST road and the Chennai – Kanniyakumari rail line after Tambaram.During the past few years, Chengalpattu has developed as a feeder town for Chennai City.Auto majors have built their factories, industrial establishments have come up, IT companies and allied offices have established their presence and residential townships have sprung up in the vicinity. These and other conventional factors such as the presence of many educational institutions and commercial establishments have made Chengalpattu an important satellite town of Chennai City.

The Tambaram – Chengalpattu section experiences heavy flow of commuter traffic.Suburban trains between Chennai Beach – Chengalpattu / Tirumalpur cater to these traffic needs but are inadequate.Constraints in line capacity hinder introduction of additional train services.Long distance express trains are also affected by this inadequacy.

The 3rd broad gauge line between Tambaram – Chengalpattu, the foundation stone for which was laid today, will address these concerns. This line will be laid by converting a metre gauge line between Tambaram – Chengalpattu. This 3rd broad gauge line will enhance line capacity and consequently help in avoiding detention of trains. This gauge conversion will pave the way for introduction of more trains to southern destinations. This will be a particularly noteworthy benefit as there have always been persistent demands from representatives of people, businessmen, professionals and the general public for introduction of more train services. An increase in train services will also delight pilgrims and boost tourism.

Furthermore, this line will also be a forerunner for a dedicated suburban corridor between Chennai Beach – Chengalpattu. This corridor will aid introduction of additional suburban train services between Chennai Beach – Chengalpattu which will be immensely beneficial to the commuters and the travelling public.
