NOW AVAIL OPTIONS FOR CATERING IN 2 RAJDHANI & 2 SHATABDI EXPRESS TRAINS

NOW AVAIL OPTIONS FOR CATERING IN
2 RAJDHANI & 2 SHATABDI EXPRESS TRAINS
In the pursuit to fulfill the budgetary promises, Indian Railway has decided to introduce the provision of optional catering in select trains on a pilot basis.
Hon'ble MR, Shri Suresh P. Prabhu in his budget speech had announced to explore the possibility of providing optional catering service in place of mandatory catering service to the passengers in trains and to make available local cuisine of choice to passengers. Accordingly, two Rajdhani Express and two Shatabdi Express trains has been nominated to conduct a trial to this effect for a period of 45 days from 15th June, 2016. Trial will be conducted on Train No.12953/54 Mumbai Central – Nizamuddin August Kranti Rajdhani Express, 12310/09 New Delhi – Rajendra Nagar Terminal Rajdhani Express, 12025/26 Pune – Secunderabad Shatabdi Express and 12277/78 Howrah – Puri Shatabdi Express trains.
During the trial period catering services will be included by default, however, the passengers have to specifically 'opt out' from the mandatory food option. Accordingly, the catering apportionment charges will be excluded from the total ticket fare. However, passengers will not be allowed to change their options, once the option has been exercised. This facility is available in all tickets such as tickets from PRS counters, e-ticketing portals of IRCTC and such tickets shall be issued with reduced fare. Railways will also ensure provision of E-catering facilities at enroute stations, as per the extant policy, so that local cuisine of choice is made available to the passengers of these trains.

KONKAN RAILWAY GEARS UP FOR MONSOON

As the monsoon is set to arrive in Konkan region, Konkan Railway has completed all its planned safety works on its route from KOLAD (after Roha station of Central Railway) to THOKUR (before Mangalore station), and is geared up for the monsoon. Special attention has been laid catch water drain cleaning and inspection of cuttings. As a result of the large scale geo-safety works executed along the railway line in last 10 years, the incidents of boulder fall and soil slip have significantly reduced, thus ensuring safe running of trains. There has been no major disruption to train services on account of boulder fall during monsoon in last 4 years.

Konkan Railway will conduct Monsoon Patrolling as per the provisions of Indian Railway  Permanent Way Mannual to ensure safety along the track. About 950 personnel will be patrolling the Konkan Railway route from Kolad to Thokur during the monsoon. Vulnerable locations will be patrolled round the clock and Stationary Watchmen will be deployed for 24 hours at critical locations. Speed restrictions will be imposed at vulnerable locations. BRN mounted excavators have been kept ready at all nominated points for quick movement in case of any emergency.

Instructions have also been issued to the loco drivers to run at a reduced speed of 40 kmph in case of heavy rainfall when visibility is reduced. Nominated trains passing by KR route between Kolad and Thokur during night time will be footplated by Officers / Supervisors in the monsoon. HAND HELD TERMINALS FOR SALE OF UTS TICKETS:
The Unreserved Ticketing System serves nearly 2 crore passengers for purchase unreserved tickets daily through nearly 12,300 counters at 5864 locations and generating approx. Rs. 59 crores of revenue per day. Hon’ble Minister for Railways had announced in the budget speech of 2016-17 to commence sale of tickets through hand held terminals for the benefit of the suburban and short distance travelers.
The aim is to minimize waiting time for passengers at booking windows. For achieving this commitment, a pilot project is being launched today at Hazrat Nizamuddin station of Northern Railway for sale of unreserved tickets through hand held terminals. This expands the ‘Points of Sale’ of ticketing with minimal infrastructure requirement. These hand held terminals will reduce queue length at booking windows and passengers need not stand in long queues.
These terminals will work in disconnected mode and being portable, tickets can be sold in the non ticket booking zone of railway premises. These terminals can issue platform ticket, monthly season tickets and journey tickets for adult, child and senior citizens.
EXPANSION OF VIKALP (ALTERNATE TRAIN ACCOMMODATION SYSTEM) TO FIVE NEW ROUTES:
For the passengers using reserved accommodation, the facility of Vikalp (Alternate Train Accommodation System) is being extended to 5 major routes of Indian Railways viz. Delhi-Howrah, Delhi-Mumbai, Delhi-Chennai, Delhi-Bangalore and Delhi-Secunderabad. All the passengers booked under the scheme will be given an option for getting alternate accommodation irrespective of the fact whether the boarding/destination station of the passenger are originating/ terminating/roadside station. Under this scheme, Waiting list passengers can give choice to opt for VIKALP scheme to get confirmed berths in alternate trains if they are getting waitlisted ticket in the train of their choice. The scheme is implemented only on Mail/Express & Superfast trains. Once a VIKALP passenger has been allotted alternate accommodation, journey modification will not be permitted. No extra charges are taken from passenger or any refund is provided for difference of fare.
LAUNCHING OF ERGONOMICALLY REDESIGNED AND OPTIMIZED TOOLS FOR TRACK GANGS, KEYMEN AND PATROLMEN FOR INDIAN RAILWAYS AND SAFETY AT UNMANNED LEVEL CROSSINGS
The Indian Railways network extant is approximately 70,000 Route Km., with approximately 1.2 Lakh Km. track patrolled by a workforce of 2,60,000 strong manpower including officer, section engineers, gangs comprising trackmen, keymen, patrolmen in all types of weather including extreme weather conditions so as to ensure safety of tracks and trains and passenger at large. These men also do strenuous work of track maintenance. Sectional Gangs are normally having gang beat of 6-8 km. For assigned work, the track maintainers are carrying contingent of tools from their tool boxes to site of work. Each track maintainer carries about 5 tools, which weigh about 26 kg. The primary tools are Beaters, crowbars, rake ballast, phowrah and mortar pans. Keymen inspect the track everyday in the morning and also attend to minor abnormalities, initiate protection in case of major problems as well as do the planned activities of greasing of Rail fittings. Among the equipment being carried by patrolman, tricolor hand signal lamps and 3 cell torch are of great significance. To facilitate greater convenience in carrying these equipment, these tools have been ergonomically redesigned by using improved metallurgy and better design. This is envisaged to afford ease in working and thereby increased productivity. Total weight of the equipment carried by trackmen has now been reduced to about 16 kg from 26 kg, this is due to the reduction in weight of some equipment like crow bar, pans etc. and also in the number of tools being carried. By suitable design and review, the weight of tools in Keyman bag has been reduced from 16 kg to about 10 kg. Shoulder bag has been ergonomically redesigned to reduce the strain of carrying these equipment and keeping the hands free. For patrolman, tricolor hand signal lamps have been replaced with tricolor torches and helmet with miner’s light and improved staff poles for site protection has been provided.
PILOT PROJECT ON IMPROVING SAFETY AT UNMANNED LEVEL CROSSINGS
Accidents at unmanned level crossings over Indian Railways have been an area of grave concern and constitute nearly half of all fatalities every year. These accidents have an enormous safety as well as punctuality dimension. To buttress efforts of the Railways to improve safety at level-crossings, new initiatives harnessing latest technologies are being introduced after elaborate studies viz. Warning to road users of approaching trains using radio frequency based method and Sensing of Obstruction on level crossing and visual warning to train drivers. The former is by using radio frequency feed from VHF based approaching train warning system and alert road users through flash lights activated by signals picked up by special equipment. The latter is by electronic observation using suitable CC cameras. The application is so made as to sense obstruction more than a particular size. If the obstruction continues on the track beyond the normal travel time, the flashing yellow light is shown to driver of approaching trains to warn about the obstruction.
Speaking on the occasion, Hon’ble Minister for Railways stated the new initiatives in the ticketing segment viz. VIKALP, Hand-Held ticketing would afford greater convenience and facility to the rail passengers. Appreciating the new ergonomically redesigned tools for the civil engineering personnel, he stated that besides enhanced work convenience, these tools would reduce the burden of carrying the tools by around 10 kg for these personnel. Speaking on the pilot project for improving safety at level-crossings, the Hon’be Minister stated that on successful trials of the project, the initiatives would be accelerated in a big way. He also stated that the addition of the H. Nizamuddin-Pune AC Superfast Express was a fulfillment of a public demand for more trains on this sector.
