NORTHERN RAILWAY INTRODUCES NEW DEMU SERVICES IN THE KASHMIR VALLEY

The completion of Jammu-Udhampur railway link in 2005 and the Udhampur-Shrimata Vaishno Devi Katra in July 2014 spelled the dawn of new era in rail connectivity in the state of Jammu & Kashmir. The rail line in the Kashmir Valley was constructed in a phased programme with the Railway steadily commissioning rail sections between Anantnag and Mazahom in October 2008, the Mazahom-Baramulla section in February 2009, and subsequently 18 km long section between Quazigund to Anantnag in October 2009 thus completing the 119 kilometre Qazigund-Baramulla railway line of the Kashmir Valley. The commissioning of the Pir Panjal Tunnel and the opening of Banihal-Qazigund railway section has brought about greater connectivity of Jammu to the Kashmir region of Jammu & Kashmir State. 13 pairs of DEMU services ply on the rail section providing all-weather connectivity in this region presently. The railway as a public mode of transportation has been quite popular since introduction with the Railway subsequently augmenting the passenger carrying capacity of the DEMU trains.
Presently, in the Baramulla-Budgam-Banihal section out of 13 pairs of train services-Baramulla-Banihal section is being served by 04 pairs of trains services, Baramulla-Badgam section is presently being served by 07 pairs of trains services and Badgam-Banihal section is being served by 10 pairs of train services. With the introduction of these two pairs of DEMU trains, the total fleet in the valley region would be 15 pairs of DEMU trains.
